Govt: Nothing to worry about Mosanto

The government has explicitly stated that political leaders should not scare the public, farmers in particular about news that a multinational company, Monsanto is about to impose its improved seed on Tanzanian soil, 

The Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives Adam Malima made the statement this week in Dodoma when winding up the debate for 2013/2014 budget speech of his ministry.The deputy minister made the statement after Shadow Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Developments Halima Mdee asked the government to explain and make its stand clear over reports that the government has warmly welcomed initiatives by Monsanto to bring in its genetically modified seeds (GMO). 

Malima said Tanzania has so far trained some quite competent agricultural experts, and people knowledgeable in matters related to a variety of crop seeds in the country, saying no variety of seed would be accepted for application without their recommendations.Continue reading
