The Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) in
collaboration with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) cordially
invites Academia, Policy makers, farmers and the general public to the 7th monthly Meeting of the Open Forum for
Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB)-Tanzania Chapter, in the evening of Thursday,
28th February 2013, at COSTECH, Kijitonyama area at 6.00 pm.
ABSTRACT OF THE THEME/TOPIC:
The role of modern Biotechnology in transformation of agricultural
sector, which has causal effect in the economic transformation of developing countries,
has become the subject of debate among academia and the general public. There
is increasing debate about the potential contribution of application of modern
Biotechnology in Agricultural production globally. This debate has taken two
divergent perspectives: Proponents of Agricultural Biotechnology see it as the
only viable solution to the socio-economic problems of countries like Tanzania.
On the other hand, critics of Agricultural Biotechnology treat it with caution and
suspicion. This Open Forum provides a platform to interrogate this issue
and chart the way forward on Agricultural Biotechnology for Tanzania and the
East African Region in terms Research, policy and avenues of bringing the benefits of Biotechnology
in the Agricultural sector while recognizing potential risks of the technology.

Nduguru, an experienced molecular plant virologist, who has received
a National Medal of Science, an honour bestowed to him by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. J. M. Kikwete in marking 51st Independence Anniversary.
