Ugandan government approves processing of GM cotton

The Uganda National Council of Science has given researchers permission to process cotton lint from Bt cotton. This follows the research team's request for permission to process the lint for storage as the exercise of burning cotton lint is rather tedious.

The cotton lint will be taken for ginning at Busitema University, and its quality will be analysed by experts to determine if the product is similar to the conventional lint used for making textiles.

The cotton was derived from the confined field trials currently being conducted on Bt cotton to test its resistance against the bollworm and against weeds. The research team obtained 2.5 tonnes of cotton lint from the Kasese district field trial at Mubuku.Continue Reading
